Staying in Vela Luka for your holiday gives you an excellent opportunity to explore every corner of the beautiful Korcula island, by car, bike, or by speedboat. Here is a shortlist of recommended sights and activities.
Visiting the birthplace of the famous globetrotter Marco Polo should be on your holiday ‘to-do list’. The town of Korčula is rich in history, artworks, museums, and beautiful architecture, and the Old Town is particularly attractive for its herringbone structure.
Also, do not miss out on Moreska, an amazing two sword dance depicting the ancient battle between the Moors (the black army) and the Christians (the red army), which can be seen in Korcula only.
If you happen to be in Korcula Town on 30 June, put on your fancy dress and join the Half New Year Celebration! Yes, for almost 20 years now the locals and their guests join together in an open-air carnival to dance and have fun. And at the stroke of midnight, they all celebrate and welcome the new half of the year.
Korcula is rich in legends, and one of them is about fairies living in the magnificent area of Kocije. This Nature Park in Croatia is located near Zrnovo village and it will take you aback with its fascinating rock formations covered with gentle moss. Two magical springs, one of which is called A Fairy's Spring, add mystery and create an almost surreal setting.
And if you are up for a romantic stroll along the second largest linden tree alley in Europe, visit Blato. This charming little town is best known for its trademark alley that was planted in 1911 and it stretches from town’s side to side. The stroll is particularly enjoyable in June when linden trees are in full bloom. But Blato has many other hidden gems to offer such as the traditional house/folk museum ‘Barilo’ or the Sanctuary of the Blessed Maria of Jesus Crucified Petkovic.
Coming to Korcula during the summer season without enjoying its beautiful beaches is simply wrong. :) From Vela Luka to Korcula Town, from one side of the island to the other, there are dozens of beaches just waiting for you to discover them. Gradina cove, Picena, Martina bok, Lucica, Prigradica, Prizba, Zitna, Kneze, Zrnovska Banja, Lumbarda...it would take some time to name each of them worth exploring, so simply ask the locals to direct you to their favorite spot. And just to give you a hint, the island of Proizd is a proud holder of Croatia's beach of the year 2007 title.
